Historic surf ski washes up at Flynns

Article from Port Macquarie News

Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club president Tony Wright, former ironman Russell Pilcher and Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club life members Jim Pullen and Ken Wilson with a 1960s surf ski used in competition by Australian ironman champion Barry Rodgers.

IF THIS old school surf ski could talk it would surely have a tale of adventure to tell.

A five-metre wooden surf ski used in the 1960s by champion ironmen will be mounted on the wall at the Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club at Flynns Beach.

President Tony Wright said the club was the perfect home for the historical ski.

It will be added to a display of a 1930s surf ski once owned by surf ski inventor Harry McLaren and old surf boat noses.

“It’s carrying on the tradition of having original craft up on the walls and it will be used as our new honour board,” Mr Wright said.

The club’s recent state title winners will be the first to have their names on the surf ski.

The former owner, retired ironman Russell Pilcher, said he inherited the ski from champion ironman Barry Rodgers.

A member of Maroubra Surf Club, Mr Rodgers won nine national ironman titles, was Australian ironman champion in 1967, 68 and 69 and captained the Australian ironman team on tours to New Zealand and South Africa during the 1960s.

He is a member of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

“While I was competing, he was the man to beat. It was a bit of a coup to get his ski,” Mr Pilcher said.

Today, the 50-year-old surf ski is owned by Jim Pullen who has donated it to the club.

Surf skis were invented in Port Macquarie by Harry McLaren who crafted the first surf ski from wood and used a small paddle to manoeuvre around oyster leases.

Another 1930s surf ski is also on display at the Mid North Coast Maritime Museum in Port Macquarie.

Tropical Cyclone ‘IRINA’ – 68.8km/h on a Double Surfski – The Mound – Durban

This story and the video comes from Barry Lewin’s fantastic website

The Story!   (written by Barry Lewin)

Its 630am and the 10min drive from home to the beach feels like it’s taking about an hour. The blood rushing through the veins and the smell of sea air are so evident with heightened sense. It is going to be one of those days where you are going to have to take life by the horns.

For days the media had been hyping up the news Tropical Cyclone IRINA was rolling through Durban and would be bringing some BIG swell with it. All the tow in surfing dudes were out the day before practicing in anticipation on what was being named the 20 year storm.

Arriving at Marine in the rain the cyclone had hit with force downing the streets of the city with enough water to stop traffic in only 2 hours. The sea was to be expected, big swell rolling into the Durban bay in lines to the horizon. I had baited my dad, Mark who first took me out onto the mound some 15 plus years ago that it was my turn to show him the mound.

With the rain and hectic weather the conditions were less than ideal. I have surfed this wave on my surfski about 5 or 6 times over the last couple year on the rare occasions it does break in much cleaner conditions with bigger waves but the excitement of doing this my pops was really cool.

We hit the water at about 9 after helping the Marine Boat crew who also planned on heading out there. Getting out was interesting with some big surf. With some patience we got out ok next to limestone to where the edge of the mounds starts.

The wind and rain made visibility really bad and picking the right waves were super difficult. After one or two misses we picked up a beauty that had a really clean wall and ran all the way to backline. The spay off the water was blinding at times but the speed of such a large ocean swell was amazing.

We managed to get up to 68.8km/h measured on my Garmin Forerunner 310xt. This is like double my previous personal best max speed and twice as fun too. Garmin Connect Data from the paddle showing the high speed and max speed: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/155120476

We must have got 7-8 waves before we headed in when the rain got to hectic. I managed to get some great footage on my Hero 2 by GoPro and put together a great clip of the high speed run and one where we got a little closer to where the wave was breaking. Check out the clip put together from the footage.

The weather never really gave up the whole day but got a gap when the rain calmed down to just rain and not a flood for a second session out there. A good friend, Dwayne Powell was brave enough to climb in the back. The conditions were greatly improved and we go some awesome rides with not as much spay. Not as fast as the morning session with a higher tide. Garmin Connect data from the session: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/155120484 .

Hope you enjoyed some of my crazy surfski action.

Carbonology Flash – New surfski!

The volume in the bow and throughout the ski is very similar to all the other skis of that size and length. Quite a bit more than the Vault and a Lot more than the Atom. The ski could best described as a longer, thinner Vault.

Hein Van Rooyen, owner of Carbonology Sport says: “It turned very well and caught waves and runs the same as the Vault in testing. I will, however give you all the latest once we start paddling the first production one. The rocker is also the same as the Vault and we were surprised at how stable it felt. Also has a very nice glide feeling from the longer waterline”.

The Flash measures 635 cm x 43 cm.

You can test paddle Carbonology Flash on Surfski Spring Camp, 11-13 May in Sweden!

Older Jewish Man Vying for World Number One: Oceanpaddler World Series Rankings

 Not written by Joe Glickman

Three races into the 2012 Oceanpaddler World Series, the scoring system designed to select the world’s best downwind paddler has yielded surprising results: Though the top 15 spots are littered with big names like Jasper and Dawid Mocke, Bruce Taylor, Brendon Sarson, Ash Nesbit, Dean Gardiner and Ben Allen, they all trail Ryan Moffet, a 32-year-old firefighter from the Gold Coast and Joe Glickman, a 52-year-old journalist from Brooklyn, N.Y.

Insiders say that the sport of ocean kayaking is in turmoil. Moffet finished 48th in last month’s Perth Doctor and Glickman, better known for his typing speed than ability to link runs, was the fourth 50+ paddler across the line. But Jeremy Cotter, who finished sixth in Perth, said he saw it coming. For the past three years Cotter has trained on the Gold Coast with the “Moff,” a swimmer turned Ironman turned paddler, and the 32-year-old former professional Ironman has also raced with Glickman in Dubai, South Africa, San Francisco and New York.

On Moffet, Cotter said: “Moff has come up in training over the last few years so to see him as the world number one is very gratifying.” Speaking about Glickman, who trails Moffet by a mere 130 points, Cotter’s voice cracked with emotion: “Ever since I saw him dominate some harsh shore dumps in South Africa, I knew he had what it takes to be one of the contenders. I even told a few mates that had he done most of the World Cups last year he likely would have been a near-number one.” Cotter, who’s taken to calling his protégée’s “No. 1″ and No. 2″, paused to collect himself. “It’s a privilege to witness the next great talent in the sport [Moff] taking his first shot at the world title….”

Although the ninth-ranked Cotter won the Fenn Cup, the first race in the ’12 Series, and plans to do three more races to qualify for the overall Series title, he was far more focused on the two thoroughbreds up front: “I liken it to Nadal versus Federer,” he said. “If one of those guys were not around, they would have the clear number one title for themselves, but over the last five years they have taken turns smashing each other.”

In Sydney, Moffet was 14th; the following day he flew across the country, placing 17th in Mandurah. Just one week later, he finished 48th, 18 minutes behind winner Tim Jacobs. Before you could say, “What’s a Moffet?” the mantle of Series leader was his alone.

Reached at home in Mermaid Waters on the Gold Coast, Moffet spoke about the pressures of sitting atop the world standings: “I went on a holiday to sunny Perth to visit a mate and to do some downwind paddling and I found myself in a battle for the number one ranking with an old Jewish man!” Pausing to ponder his predicament, he added: “That is quite a scary statement; I think anyone would be scared.”

Glickman, who is quick to point that that he’s the fastest Jewish paddler in Brooklyn and one of the fastest “Red Sea Pedestrians” in North America, was far less humble. “After the New York Giants won the Super Bowl last month, earning yet another World Championship for the USA, I set my sights on a World Title of my own. I knew it was a big ask but with the right attitude, a few breaks and a lot of boat wash, anything is possible.”

Moments after the World Series Rankings were published, Hassidic communities and Senior Citizen Centers across the U.S. lit up www.surfski.info, prompting Series administrator Dean Gardiner to point out that only four paddlers had competed in all three events. Said Glickman: “Yes, well, right, people have been discounting my people’s paddling prowess for millennium.” Listing all three standout RSP’s in the sport — Shaun Rubenstein, Rami Zur and Graeme Solomon — he added: “but look at us now. I just need to finish ahead of the Mocke boys in my next two World Cup events and I will bring the title back to Brooklyn.”

Confronted with the fact that in their last head-to-head battle at the Doctor last month, Glickman finished 72 positions behind the Mocke brothers, he channeled his inner Oscar, stating:. “I wasn’t that fit in Australia. Since my return I’ve been eating really well and working out nearly every day.”

However, when informed that Moffet planned to attend the next race on the tour, The King of the Harbour in Auckland on March 30, Glickman grew quiet.

Moffet turned uncharacteristically brash: “Glickman will have to do some serious work if he aims to claim my number one spot!”

Stay tuned!
