The surfski community in Sweden is growing. More surfski races have been during the year. One new race was held last weekend, The Fjellbacka Surfski Open. Fjellbacka (Fjällbacka) is located on the Swedish west coast and has one of the most beautiful archipelagos in Sweden. The weather forecast wasn’t that good. Quite a few paddlers was discouraged by this and decided not to race. The Skippers meeting was followed by a collective paddling trip to the start which was held on the Weather Islands (Väderöarna).

The race course from Väderöarna to Fjällbacka was 13 km.

The winner Ulf Eriksson

Pedro Pontes is warming up before the start at Väderöarna

After the start from the Harbour at Väderöarna the course went to the light house Södra Syster, turning north to the island of Slängrumpan and after that heading for the churh tower in Fjellbacka. The first part was really calm with only a light wind and small swells from south.

Evy Lantz and Patrik Mossberg paddling to the start, in company with some porpoises.

This is a really good and fun initiative of the organizers, Patrik Mossberg and 2SEA4U, of the contest. We look forward to and hope that others will compete in next year’s Fjellbacka Surfski Open. Fjällbacka is one of Sweden’s most beautiful places. Fjällbacka is one of the most beautiful places. Take the opportunity to combine the race with your holiday next year.
