My hometown Goteborg is divided by the river Göta älv. My friend Trent lives south of the river and commute with his surfski to his office at Volvo north of the river. That must surely be the best way to get to work. He states that there are really good downwind conditions when the wind coming from west.  With a 30 knot wind blowing from west last tuesday my friend Patric and I decided to try it out ourselves. This was the first time I ever paddled from the river mouth to the city center. It’s a 11,5 km long paddle trip.

It was perfectly alright conditions. The waves tended to be good in the middle of the waterway. Normally the waterways are very busy but there were hardly no traffic at the moment. The waves flattened out at times just to be bigger again within a minute or two, proberbly depending on the current from river. It was great fun to have done the trip but I prefer open sea!

Surfski Spring Camp 2013 was held last weekend in Sweden. It’s still very cold in the water. The winter has been long this year. But the best sign of spring is the Surfski Spring Camp. The location was really great at the Gunnarsö Camping, just outside the city of Oskarshamn on the Swedish east coast. About 50 happy surfski paddlers from Sweden, Denmark and Norway attended the camp. Unfortunately the weather was very calm and we had really flat conditions. Instead of doing some downwind sessions I practiced my technique with Anders Gustafsson, the K1 500 meter World Champion (2010), as a teacher. Anders gave individual instructions and tips to everyone on how to improve your paddling technique.

I also got the opportunity to try out some new surfskis I haven’t tried before. Vajda Hawx, Nordic Kayaks Nitro and Rapido 2.0 as well as the new surfski from Plastex. I really liked the Hawx and the Nitro.

It was a great event (besides the lack of wind and waves). We were grouped in four and stayed in small cottages with very nice standard. We had excellent food and the most important was to meet old friends as well as some new nice acquaintances. Here are some photos from the surfski spring camp.

I was a seakayaker before I started with surfski paddling. Nowdays I’m only into surfski paddling. Today some seakayakers acted as icebreakers and helped me to reach open water. I’m so thankful. It was a beautiful day but no waves.

The interest for surfski has increased in Sweden the recent years. We have a lot of happy paddlers enjoying downwind paddling but there have only been a few races. The Swedish Canoe Federation is now organizing the first national Surfski Series in Sweden this year. It is called The Swedish Surfski Cup and will consist of four races. The first race, Vågryttaren (The Wave Rider in English) will be taking place on the 19th of May in my hometown Göteborg.  Vågryttaren will be a 15 km downwind race. It will also be the first of two qualification races for the Swedish National Surfski Team. The National Team will take part in the Surfski World Championships in Portugal.

The national teams from Australia and South Africa better watch out! Sweden is on the hunt! :)

Yesterday I was told that the ice was almost gone. Today, when it was beautiful weather with no wind, -1 C and a warming sun, I decided to bring my drysuit instead of my gym clothes. Good choice! I got a good 10 km exercise on the sea for the first time in weeks. True happiness! Another good thing is that the sun doesn’t set until 5 pm and it is getting much brighter every day now.

Just some ice outside the club. I had to find weak parts, paddle up on the ice and let the weight from the surfski and me break the ice.

Freedom! :)

Aterra is opening a new surfski and kayak store at the harbor in Helsingborg, Sweden. Helsingborg is located in south of Sweden and very close to Denmark. You reach Helsingborg within one hour drive from Copenhagen. The strait between Denmark and Sweden offer good downwind conditions when winds coming from the north or south. Aterra aim to be a general paddling center and the obvious choice in south of Sweden. Leif who is running Aterra is already very active in the paddling scene and doing a lot of activites to increase the interest for surfski paddling (eg surfski camps and races). The new store will open in spring next year. Hopefully it will attract the Danish paddling community with the proximate location to Denmark.

During the past years there have been more and more film clips available at YouTube and Vimeo from different water sports, surfski is not an exception.  When waterproof cameras have become better, cheaper and easier to use it has made film making more common among paddlers. More people want to document and share their experiences. That is really great. You can find reviews, tutorials and inspirational videos on YouTube and other sites.

Emma Nilsson and Evy Lantz came up with a great idea to start a Surfski Film Festival. This year it was held in Hindås, west of Göteborg in Sweden. The film festival was a success and great fun. Emma and Evy hope and belive that the interest will increased even more to next year with more contestants.  They also hope that more people became inspired to start with surfski paddling and discover the fun with downwind paddling.

Emma Nilsson and Evy Lantz with the first prize for the best surfski film. The prize is actually Dawid Mocke’s flip flops. He visited Sweden in May during the Spring Camp 2012 and forgot his flip flop.

During the night more surfski films were shown, to get inspiration from paddlers all over the world. There were also discussions about next year’s surfski season here in Sweden.

The temperature in Hong Kong is about +25 C (77 F) and in Arkösund, Sweden, it’s +4 C (39 F) at the moment.  Why not cool down after the Steelcase Dragon Run with the Bråviken Beach to Beach Cold Feet Paddle Race in Sweden on the 17th of November.

The Bråviken Beach to Beach Cold Feed Paddle Race is cross the bay of Bråviken, not far from the Seamasters race route. The race organizer and Epic agent Nomado is also opening their new HQ and are planning an After Ski after the race.  Free beer, snacks and a nice sticker to everyone who paddle a SUP or Epic Surfski. Water temperature? Also + 4 C!

Tempting?! Rearrange your flights from Hong Kong and send e-mail to Erik at Nomado to sign up for the race!
