Last tuesday I participated in the paddle race around the island of Djurgården in central Stockholm, the Djurgården Runt. It is a 9 km race in the Stockholmscupen (The Stockholm Cup). The Stockholmscupen is a series of 14 different paddling races in the Stockholm area organized by the local paddling clubs. The idea of the Stockholmscupen is that it should be easy both to compete and organize the races. I live in Göteborg on the Swedish west coast but I’m working in Stockholm occasionally. This time it was a perfect opportunity to combine a race during my working period in Stockholm.

Information about the race
35 paddlers turned up at the FKI club house. FKI is beautifully located north east of Djurgården. I borrowed a Fusion Surfski, PDF and paddle. Thanks Jens! I have just tried the Fusion for five minutes prior this race. It is a initial stable surfski from Nordic Kayaks. With only small swell from the ferries in the habour it wasn’t that technically. Tommy Karls took the lead from the start to the finish. He was followed by Martin Nordstrand and Johan Stridh. Agneta Bergman-Fredriksson finished first, followed by Magda Gadd and Elin Johansson in the women’s race.

It was a fun race in beautiful surroundings. There are no restrictions in the race of which type of kayak you can use. Seven of the top eight paddlers used surfskis during the race. I estimate about 50% paddled surfskis. The Stockholm cup is a great concept. Easy to organize and it is easy to particpate. No fees, no prizes. But the traditional hot dogs after the race is a must! II finished the 9 km race in 51.10 min. Hopefully I will be able to plan some work with further races in the Stockholmscupen.
Tommy Karls celebrate the victory with an apple after the race.
